Each patient is assessed at their first appointment to determine exactly what the diagnosis is so that treatment can be tailored specifically for their needs. The cause of the problem is not always where the pain is felt and there may be other areas which are contributing to the symptoms, so a thorough examination is vital. The diagnosis and treatment are then discussed with you and treatment is usually started in the first session.

Sports Injury treatment
Whether you have sustained your problem doing sport or just turning over in bed, our experienced physiotherapist can help diagnose exactly what the problem is and treat it using various modalities, manual therapy and teaching pertinent exercises which help you to help yourself.
Rehabilitation and exercise therapy
Each patient that attends Barnt Green Physiotherapy is assessed to diagnose what the problem is and how best to help each person. Then appropriate treatments can be used to help the patient to return to full activity as quickly as possible. This may involve an exercise programme, manual therapy, electrotherapy, pacing and advice about future prevention.
Back and Neck Treatment
Pain may be localised around the spine or may also be referred to the arm and head (from the neck) or buttock, groin and leg (from the back). There is also likely to be spasm around the spine which is very painful and locks down local movement. Using the McKenzie method patients are assessed to determine the exact nature of the problem and a specific programme of treatment is made for each patient to abolish the pain, restore movement and function and regain confidence in everyday life activities again. Using the knowledge gained though treatment, patients can then continue an exercise programme to prevent recurrences or know how to help themselves if they do run into problems in the future.
It has revolutionised the examination and treatment of spinal and peripheral problems but even now it is not taught in any depth in the physiotherapy training and so only a few physios are able to offer this treatment. Robin McKenzie devised the system in the 1950s and the philosophy is that about 80% of spinal patients can help themselves if they know how to. It uses very logical principals that the patient can follow to quickly start helping themselves and most patient are amazed at the results. It can also help sort out the serious problems which will not respond to physiotherapy treatment and need onward referral so it is a very safe form of treatment. Kath Hamflett at Barnt Green Physiotherapy has done extensive training in using this method and is McKenzie credentialed. Over the last 20m years has treated thousands of patients successfully with it.
McKenzie Therapy
McKenzie therapy is a much researched and validated method of treating back, neck and joint pain by putting the patient at the centre of the treatment and where possible using exercise and posture to produce long-term, lasting, independent relief from pain and disability.

Gym ball work
Once a diagnosis has been ascertained, a treatment plan is worked out to deal with the problem. This may involve using the gym ball to do specific exercises to target muscles which are underworking or overworking and need dampening down. It is a great fun way of exercising and done well quickly brings awareness of the muscles that are not being used and helps to switch on them again. The ball is so versatile and can be used in so many different ways, definitely not just sit ups!
Muscle imbalance correction
In order to move well and without effort, the correct muscles should be working with the right timing so that other structures aren’t put under too much strain and cause them to break down. This can happen to mere mortals in their daily life or even top athletes. You could be suffering with a painful shoulder which has been caused by underworking muscles in the opposite hip. Unless the full mechanics are dealt with, the problem will just keep recurring. Our experienced physiotherapist has extended training to work out where the problem lies and help you improve the muscle timing and integrate this into your movement pattern.
Electrotherapy
Ultrasound, interferential current, faradic stimulation, flowtron and biofeedback may be used during treatment, usually in combination with other forms of treatment to assist healing in the tissues.
Postural Advice
Once your pain is eased and your joints have regained their mobility, you will be taught simple and do-able ways of improving your posture. Most people are amazed at how much more comfortable they feel and choose to continue to implement the newly acquired skills into their daily lives.
Ergonomic assessment and advice
Vast numbers of people spend hours a day sitting at a desk to work and if the set-up of the work station is not good, it can aggravate old problems or set off new problems sooner or later. An ergonomic assessment in the office can help to deal with these issues or if attending for treatment of a back, neck or RSI problem, ergonomic advice will be offered during the course of treatment to help prevent recurrence.
